Tour de Somerville?
Have you done any road racing at all?
Even A rides with a local shop/club?
Look here: http://www.njbikeracing.com/calendar/calendar.pl?month=3
And, as Norm implies, do some structured group rides before showing up for a Cat 5 race.
I'd do some of the local group throwdowns and even some local crits before you go travel a few hours into PA to do anything. If you're not really ready for it your race may last 10 minutes then you get spit out. I've seen plenty of guys in great shape last mere minutes in some of these races. Just want to make sure you don't go dropping time & money on a trip that may turn sour fast.
I believe that the Hills of Hunterdon is going to be a junior only race this year.
Hi Chris. I would recommend starting out with the Tuesday night Sussex races at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Mellow course and fairly laid back. They start March 20th. There are also early season races at Branchbrook Park in Newark starting the first week of March on Saturdays.
Sean, I believe that the Hills of Hunterdon is going to be a junior only race this year.
AAAaaargh! But it was close by! Thanks for the heads up Larry. Chris, don't do this one this year.
If you want some local throw downs check out Tuesday nights at Rahway River Park off of St. George ave. Its basically a pick up crit with locals.
Once its light enough they go at 6pm and do about 20 laps. Ideally you want to make the first ones and here is why. Everyone is rusty so you won't be the only one who gets dropped off the back. Other guys will be more tolerant of a nube joining in and may even give pointers.
The Cranford guys owned this at one time...do you remember Andy Muldoon & Manny Lopez?

There's a ton of races every week. Only thing is, most are not listed yet.
