2011 GF Rig

I am looking into picking up a ss mtb.
My 3 criteria are;
  1. Affordable
    [*]Light Weight
    [*]NO EBB

Since GF/Trek scrapped the EBB the Rig seems like the obvious choice. I really want to check out the G2 geometry and for the money I don't think there is a better bike. I am assuming I can convert the wheels to a tubleless set up...right?
There are cheaper frames on the market(on-one, vassago, haro mary) but these are cromoly steel which are a lot heavier. My mind is 98% made up with the Rig, just want to see if anyone has this bike(2011 Rig w/slider dropouts).
Also I know I could go with Reynolds steel but these frames are more expensive(I could buy complete bike for what I'd pay for frame).

A lot heavier? I would disagree. Sure the steel is without a doubt heavier, but how much is a lot? What is your primary use for this bike? Having gone from steel to aluminum, and as my only bike, I do miss that steel feeling. Since you have another bike, I'm assuming the SS will be a fun screw around bike and not a race rig. I wouldn't dismiss the steel just yet. If you can ride steel/aluminum before buying, It may change your mind.

Ive had 2 fisher SS's but they both had different sliding dropout systems than the 2011 rig.
Sometimes when im really torquing on the pedals (as you will do often on a SS) the wheel gets slightly out of alignment. Its usually a 2 minute fix easily done on the trail.
I completely cured it with a DT swiss ratcheting skewer.

For what its worth, I think its a killer bike, and I would bet the geometry of the fisher makes up for the lack of "realness" you will get with the lack of "steelness".

Pearl makes a good point here. I shared your same line of thought when I replaced my 4130 steel SS for a 3.5lb aluminum frame with similar geometry. No doubt the aluminum was faster, lighter, etc, but the overall ride quality suffered a bit.

But since I don't plan to do any serious racing, I'm thinking of going back to steel. Don't get me wrong, I love the aluminum frame but there is something to be said about steel and a single-speed bike, especially a rigid one. A standard steel frame might weigh 1-1.5 lbs more. Not much, considering I weigh at least 165 lbs times that.

....and then again, the Rig, with its G2 geometry and Fox Fork, might make for a super smooth ride.

Ok. When you talk about going from steel to al. I am going to assume your talking about your old Mary and your newer Cdale.

The Mary weights in at 27lbs while the Rig is just under 25 lbs...2 lbs is a lot in my book. I am not sure what your Cdale weighs.

My primary use of the bike would be on SS friendly trails, + I really want to do SSaP this year (so I want a raceworthy bike). + I am intrigued by the G2 geometry, this is the same geo as the Superfly.

I have only ridden Al frames, so I don't have a steel feeling to miss. As long as the bike has a front shock I am comfortable.

I probably should take a Mary for a test drive anyways.

Foxtrot forgot mention that he rides a hot pink on-one scandal. It's al so maybe u can look into that as well.

I had the Mary ss one month before I sold it, no way wad that tank 22 lbs, the wheels and tires alone probably weigh 10. Anyways, I don't think the cheaper steel frames are designed well enough to make the most of that steel feel. The Mary is a nice bike and is a gateway 29er for a lot of people, but I would go as far to say that based on it's feel you should accept the weit penalty. I sidle never recommend a trek or gf bike to anyone, but it may be your best bet for the money. Does giant make an ss 29er? Because that xtc is a sweet bike.

It was 25lbs with Crossmax wheels and before the Niner fork. I'm 88% sure I'm going to Hauler's saturday...if they aren't busy I'll put it on the scale. Stock it was in the area of 27lbs. If I have to take the grips off to hit 22lbs I will 🙂.

Iggy, much of that weight is in the wheels. Im not sure about 2011, but I know the 09's, 10's had the rythm wheelset which I think are made out of lead. Without any crazy parts my paragon was 23.5lbs, geared...Same frame. You could probably drop 3lbs off that bike in just wheels and tires alone.

I agree with the Mary being a gateway bike for SS/29er's. Most folks who buy these bikes want to upgrade a year later.

The Giant XTC is a sweet frame but giant does not make anything ss specific in MTB.

Yeah, I can always upgrade the wheelsets. IMO the stock Rig is in the ball park weight wise to be competitive. Its what I'd call a mid-level SS MTB...at a good price.

I was looking at a Misfit, but now I'm starting to lean to a small domestic fabricator using domestic tubing. Leaning towards Alum, don't know how much more smoother a steel rigid could be.

Lead times are up to a year, with a cost rivialing a carbon supfly.

Go with the Rig, GF wouldn't put out a poor design:hmmm:

Misfit AL

I just ordered my Misfit Al frame. They are having a mega Friday sale. I test rode Mattys last season and feel in love with the frame and geomitry of it. Go Misfit.....
