Do "eBikes" have to have pedals? Asking for a friend...

shanghai-customs-ecub-e-scooter-elektro-roller-01.png

As an enthusiast of motorcycles, I wouldn't ride anything that looks like that atrocity, electric or gas motor.

I don’t ride motorized two-wheelers, period. I just wondered if there is a pedal requirement to be considered an “eBike”?
Not sure of the legalities. I think anything over 49cc is considered a motorcycle. Anything under 49cc and pedals a moped. Concerning bikes, this is the NJ DOT’s definition of a bike:

39:4-14.5 Definition.
“Bicycle” means any two wheeled vehicle having a rear drive which is solely human powered and having a seat height of 25 inches or greater when the seat is in the lowest adjustable position.

i'm still working angles on these things -

what if people were actually responsible, so you can take the "run people over" out of the equation, cause most of us don't run people over now.
Also, remove the "going faster than they can handle" - maybe that happens the first time, but people don't like hitting trees on any bike.

So can i ride with seriously faster people? I can't keep up, from a skills level, on anything flat or dh. So the big advantage is climbing.
yet the climbing at most of our places takes skill, not just fitness. So if i don't clear something, i got a 50lb bike to finish the climb?

What would happen if i had one?
well, at about the two hour point of riding with Jim & Bill, (taking it easy on me,) I'm toast.r
And I go even slower, because fatigue, and fatigue leads to injuries, when ya push it.

So the real benefit to me would be the non-tech climbs and being able to delay fatigue.
I could't go dh any faster, cause i suck.
I could go a bit faster in the flats, but still end up brake checking, again i suck.

So there you have it - delay fatigue to ride longer, not necessarily faster overall.

You can definitely make technical climbs you’ve never made before. Not being winded makes them much easier.

Rick just seems to like tossing out memes....revelence to the statement, or topic Is optional. Just be happy it wasnt some dusty old WWE one.

i rode this sweet bastard today...as @MadisonDan has previously mentioned, these are fun AF!

i wanted to do a side by side compare of my speed and HR vs my typical, analog CitiBike commute, but of course, i forgot to hit record on my apple watch strava before starting...so...

all i can tell you is, i did my typical 9 mile ride in 39 minutes vs the daily average of about 45 minutes...

i was also a hell of a lot less sweaty, though not completely sweat free

...went to Trexler out in PA last Sunday. I am grinding up one of the long climbs there and I hear someone coming up on me and he buzzes by me. Meet him at the top of the hill, tell him his is cheating 😉 and we have a nice chat about ebikes. His take was "in a place like this I can ride for 20 miles rather than 10"....off he went. He passed me, going uphill, three more times. While I did enjoy the day big time, I can see the allure, especially since I am an old guy and someday won't be able to do what I was doing...I see no real harm, but worry about folks abusing the speed, because if we get modded bikes out there basically going at moto speeds, bad stuff likely to happen (keep seeing electric "bikes" that are more close to moto advertised"...but a sane person on a commercially reputable brand of e-bike, I have no issue with.

As a fellow old guy, I say why wait? Throw in the towel, get one now! Everyone is just trying to find a way to justify it one way or the other, so just do it, we have a legit reason. Old! Screw what everyone else says, embrace it. I say the same thing to those 85yr old fools I see on the lift lines.

So you are skinning-up when you go by the lift lines? 😀

I don't think octogenarians pay for lift tickets, so it is a solid economic decision.....

still don't get it?? the post was a joke - you seriously think anyone would confuse an e motorcycle for an e bike? sheesh!
And you are apparently cherry-picking the posts you want to read. He later hinted he didn't post it as a joke:

I don’t ride motorized two-wheelers, period. I just wondered if there is a pedal requirement to be considered an “eBike”?

The bike pictured does sort of blur the lines a bit. it's obviously an e-moto, but could be confused as an e-bike.

Honestly, I don't really give a fuck if it was a joke. My sense of humor depends on the situation. If it looks like a legit question, I will answer it honestly, no matter how innocuous or leading it may seem.

The majority of real ebike customers I see realize they will have to pedal. Almost everyone else assumes there is a throttle.
