Whomever is trimming back the laurel on the different trails in Allare could you please stop...
By trimming this at the height that it is at there is now a pungee threat and now they will need to be cut down to ground level and will widen the trails.
While we appreciate the help in the park if you really want to help let me know and we can go over how to do these things the right way. Also if anyone sees anybody trimming back the laurel let me know at allaire@jorba.org. I am mostly talking about TW there is a lot of stuff that has been cut to a "handlebar" height that someone can fall on and get hurt. Remember there is no shame in walking a tough section until you can clean it with no problems we all started the same way. please do not modify the trails to make it easier this goes for every park that we ride at a lot of volunteer hours are put in to make the parks fun and some of the section are supposed to be tough.

oh man!:cry::cry: dont tell me they are at it again!

Maybe we need to put up a sign at the trail head?

Something in my gut is telling me this isnt necessarily mountain bikers.

it most likely is one of the other user groups. recently tiger was marked out with chaulk and i have noticed white circular blazes nailed to the trees.

maybe its time to press the park to rehab, or replace the dilapidated
kiosk at the trailhead. this could even be a tm project. with a proper kiosk we could post informational signage with some do's and dont's. this would be a positive step to correcting a recurring problem at the park.

This is why I ask if anyone sees any of this going on just email me at allaire@jorba.org
If we can explain how and when to trim things back we will all have a better time on the trails. We can all use these trails and do it in a way as to not upset each other.
There is a budget for a new kiosk but as we know it does take forever to get the park (state) to do things we can bring it up again to keep reminding them.

Kiosks make nice Boy Scout projects - contact a local scoutmaster.

Let them know a grant for the wood would be possible (although they can usually get it donated from the local lumber yard.) Then the scout has to write it up and submit the request, while working with the park (drawing/location) - probably a no brainer if it is a replacement, but a good experience for the scout.

This really pisses me off. 😡
They destroyed the one trail already. We need to find them ASAP and :wedgie:
A sign would be a good start as they may just be ignorant. Pat's idea with the scouts is a winner. You could also make it a joint effort and introduce them to JORBA and teach some hands on trail maintenance techniques.

Mike - I have some contacts for Brick Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops if you think this is a good idea.

I also have a contact for scouts, in Western Monmouth county if it'll help.

The Park applied for and was approved for Kiosks a few years ago. Mike, check with Chris on that.

No one really reads anything on the kiosks anyway, there are large signs regarding helmet use. 🙄 We need infrared cameras and machine gun turrets.:getsome:

you'd be surprised. as for the helmets some people can't and won't ever be reached. the kiosk is also an image thing, as with proper trail blazes. a rag tag looking park opens itself up to lawless behaviors.

I have contacted the park about this and will again to see where we stand I would like to see a new kiosk and have it turned 90 degrees so we can you both sides for announcements.

no what we really need are monochromatic coherent light generators set up in different parts of the park just to make things interesting..
clean and efficient that's the way to get things done.

If a few of us want to try to pitch in and rebuild the kiosk I am in, any other takers? Any way we get get some funding from the park for the rebuild?

I agree that the kiosk adds an "official look" and prevents the mischief. At least the mischief we want to keep out.

count me in

Just out of curiosity... How hard would the process be to turn a trail to mtb specific and single direction? In terms of park approval process. For instance, there are state parks that forbid anything but hikers on certain trails and it would make sense to restrict certain trails to mtb. As for single direction, it may help with trail wear if you flip direction every so often (I know some motocross tracks do this).

As far as I have seen, the bikes are low man on the totem pole as evidenced by the proposed bicycle ban at the park almost fifteen years ago. (The MTB community at Allaire has establised a solid reputation in that time through a lot of volunteer work). So I would say MTB only trails would be a dream, and only upset people in this multi-use park.

As for single direction, with the amount of traffic the park sees throughout the year (more riders from up north during the winter), it would be impossible to enforce or to inform.

We can't even get people to carry thier garbage out/not build jumps in the middle of a trail/not cut bandit trails/not ride moto in the park, and those are all common sense/posted requests.

So with all due respect (and I am saying with all due repect) It would be impossible and a waste of time, I would put it up there with my dream of a park approved, sustainable, eco friendly, northshore style, wooden trail down by the river that would not wash away in a hurricane.

I understand what you are saying but the issue is even though you set a trail to one direction I would say only a handful of people will follow that. just look at the parking lots at any of the parks today as to how many people stay off the trails when they are wet and soft. I am in contact with the park about a new kiosk and will be putting some signage in it about trail use and such.
