Bash guard

I want to replace my big ring with a bash.

This is probably going to be the worst n00b question ever but ....

I have a Scott Scale Elite 29r with Shimano FC-M552, 2-piece Design, 42Ax32Ax24T crank set.
When shopping for bash guards I want one large enough to cover the 32A ring, so 34 would seem correct. All I see are 34T. So what do the "A" and "T" stand for and do I need to match that when purchasing the bash?

Have fun I have no issue being the but of the joke.

32A is a very petite girl. 😀

I think the "A" just stands for aluminum. Most middle and outer rings are made of aluminum and the inner(Granny) is steel. I never saw a chaingring listed as 32A. just 32T. in which case the "T" stands for Tooth. I could be wrong:hmmm:

Check out bbgbashguard.com

The 32t fits over the 32t ring; you don't need a 34.

Well played sir.

Your description of the "A" and "T" makes sense. I figured the "T" was tooth but the A was throwing off big time. Thanks.

that's a pretty bad assumption. It depends on material and design.

If you're talking about that BBG, then yes, those things are for weight weenies.

Keep in mind you may have to adjust your front de-railer too. I went from a 36T to a 32T up front and had to get a 32 bash-guard. The 36 Bash-guard was to big for proper de-railer adjustment. At least that was what I was told. Made sense to me.

I had done the same thing on the same bike and crank you have. I used the blackspire lite god bashguard and just adjusted the front derailer to not shift past the middle. Seemed like a pretty good setup. However I just changed my crank to xt so if your looking for a cheap bashguard to try I have one laying around. But anything 104bcd should work.

Thanks everyone.

Sjfxt - Glad to read you did this successfully. I was planning on going with the race face diabolous and I think I probably still will, but I do appreciate the offer.

Yes, I was talking about the BBG specifically. My 32 has held up well for a year now but I think a 34 or 36 would have been toasted.

The BBG bashes are awesome for XC use. They will bend if you hit them hard enough, but they hammer flat nicely. As stated, don't oversize, get whichever size you need for the chain ring you will run.

Yes, BBG's are sweet and they're like $12 with warranty on cracking. 😉

BBG is all sold out of 104BCD 32s, but I guess based on the reviews here I should wait and give them a try.

Meh. If you're actually bashing things, you'll probably want something beefier. If you're just using it as a Chain guide then it'll be fine.

Get what you can... a decent bashguard is only like $30 and its not gonna make or break your ride.

I run a race face lite (or something like that) and it's more than adequate. Just dont get plastic... they break or the bolts will pull through.

They have them in the oval design...wonder what the difference is (besides $8.00)?
Edit: oval lighter and not lifetime warranty. Ah.

I had a raceface 34t on order but the seller botched it, now planning to get the BBG...but...

Of all you guys running 2x9, anyone try 34t on the middle ring? And if so, what ramped ring are you using? I might get the 34t bash just cause.
Thank you.

I have the oval bastard. Holds up fine to my fat ass with zero finesse at log-overs. I have been thinking of going to a 34T as well (2x9). When I burn up the 32T ring I will surely switch.
