Biking Clothes

Do I really need those tight spandex pants that also indicated whether I'm circumsized or not? 🙂 Advantages/disadvantages. Right now I wear a good pair of baggy biking shorts and underarmour warm gear shirt in the warmer monthes and Underarmour cold gear turtleneck, pants and a underarmour ninja hood in winter. Are there biking socks that don't stay as wet as cotton?

Get biking socks immediately. Cotton is the devil.

Fully embrace cycling culture and go for the spandex bib shorts. There is nothing better. I f"ing hate baggy shorts on the bike.

Do you need proper gear? With the exception of a proper helmet, No. You don't need it.

Pretty much any moisture wicking fabric sock is going to be better than Cotton. Cotton is the worst fabric you can wear if you're going to sweat. Defeet make some nice socks. My favorite are the wool ones.

I'm on board with the biking socks, but I don't know about the bib shorts. What's the advantage?

Wool Socks!!?? sounds hot and itchy no?

you dont know what your missing until you try it. thats how i was. mandi found a post that i said "why would i ever where bib shorts etc" now i know the hype. the hype is real. its not like 29er wheel hype, its the real deal.

They dont ride down, and no waist elastic cutting into you. They are so much more comfortable.

Wool socks and Jerseys kick total ass. Hard to believe, but they are soft, dry, and warm/cool.

REALLY?! the only wool I ever knew was hot and itchy I'll have to look into it. Any good bike shop gonna have this stuff?

I wear wool socks in the hottest of weather. keep your feet dry. synthetic wool socks do just as well in the summer at that (though not as great when it's cold).

tighty shorts are more comfortable and cooler (temp wise) than baggy shorts (which on occasion can get hung up on the seat). but I just cant used to tighty shorts. I am a baggy short guy.

obviously NEED helmet.

gloves are highy recommended for various reasons as are cycling shoes.

Got the helmut (of course), gloves and shoes. I just can't deal with the look of the bib/pants. I have had the same issue of the baggys getting hung up on the seat that is one disadvantage.

Anybody ever seen bibs that are taller? I have one set that I don't wear because they are too short for me. When I put the straps over my shoulders they pull up too much and it is not comfortable to say the least.

The fact that the bibs are waay more comfortable aside, this is a very serious reason to ditch the baggies. If you're hanging up on the saddle, you're inevitably going to crash because of it. If you're hanging up, it means you're shifting your weight around a lot - i.e. riding technical features that are going to hurt pretty bad if you fall on them.

What the bibs look like is irrelevant. To the general population, we all look like huge tools. Doesnt matter if we're wearing a neon tri suit or baggy street clothes. we all still look like dorks.

I've got some that I dont wear because the straps are too long/loose. What size shorts are you?

You got that right My son hated riding with me over the winter with my underarmour cold gear pants but I still wore my shorts over them.
