Remember- It's tick season

Just sitting around watching tv when I had an itch on my head - well that " itch"
turned out to be a tick . Having dogs I knew when I felt the start of the blood balloon exactly what it was . I got it out cleanly and it was a wood tick . So remember tick season is here and it's gonna be a bad one I fear . Check yourself after those rides in the woods !

i swear ticks have homing beacons for certain blood types .. i've found a tick on myself once, ever .. seems like some people find 2 or 3 every time they ride

today, i was literally bush-wacking through the woods with plant growth all around my legs, non-trails for 2 mile stretches .. no ticks .. maybe i'm not looking hard enough :hmmm:

Yeah I never get them either, but people I ride with get them all the time. Weird.
But I did get lymes twice, so the very few times I've gotten one I picked a winner.

I have to admit - I was doing the same . Lots of obvious deer beds around - you have to use your head this time of year and I didn't . I was off my bike hiking abit in areas where I couldn't ride .....

I'm tick neurotic, if I wipe out, stop in tall grass, walk off the trail to piss I check myself like a friggin idiot. Hate those F'ers.

..i've been using this for years and it's worked well. 😎

I / we use it every time we go out. Doesn't smell all that bad, but so far no ticks!

My fear is if I do get one, it blends in with the mud/dirt and I won't catch it in time.

I usually have good luck with Off. And I sometimes wear goofy looking soccer socks. I didnt wear either on Saturday and found a tick crawling up my leg on the car ride home.

Update:

I was at the doctors today for my pinched nerve and while there I showed him where the ticks were . He didn't like the way the one area looked - still red around it- so now I'm on antibiotics . Better safe than sorry . I'm trying ALL the tick stuff you guys suggested !

That's a good call. And you should consider yourself lucky that your doctor took the initiative. I had Lyme Disease two summers ago, and I had to pretty much plead with my doctor to get me tested. I had the whole nine yards, too -- I had a circular rash on my chest, the hit-and-run fevers, muscle and joint pain, all of it. But the doctor looked at the rash and said it could have been caused by a chain I wear, which was just stupid because the rest of my neck had nothing. He finally agreed to test me, and then called twice in the same day -- once to tell me that the tests were negative, and then second time he acted like he had never called before and said that my results were positive. I was livid. I called his office (he was part of a group) and asked them to please let me know which it was. They confirmed the positive result and put me on Amoxycillin. I had a follow-up with an infectious disease guy a few weeks after taking the antibiotic and he took one look at the pictures I had of the rash and everything else and said it was a textbook case of Lyme and that the tests were probably not even necessary to diagnose it. I was lucky, though -- I did get the antibiotic fast enough and I haven't had any lingering issues since, so I think I cleared it up. But I still wonder what I might be dealing with now if I hadn't made such a stink about getting tested. He never would have suggested it and I might be living with a bunch of nasty health issues. I guess it makes sense, then, that I changed my primary care doc after that experience.

So for anyone who thinks they might have been bitten, don't let your doctor talk you out of getting tested and maybe even request a round of antibiotic just in case. It's a fairly simple test, and while it isn't perfect, the alternative isn't too cool.

Good for you 1speed for not taking no for an answer.

That said, the last time I read up on this, the standard Lyme blood test is only 60% accurate. That means 4 out of 10 times, the results are either a false negative or a false positive. So if there are signs or symptoms that persist, don't have complete faith in the test. The doc can give a first round blitz of antibiotics if there is any uncertainty. Better safe than sorry as when this disease gets into stage II, it can have one off their feet for years ( I know two cases where ths occurred). If it goes to stage III, you can die.

I believe there is a better more accurate test available but it is more expensive. I am not one for casual use of antibiotics, but for these cases I play it safe.

That's what my doctor did . He gave a 1 week supply of strong antibiotic to take care of it if there is a problem . He said if I feel any symptoms after that , then I will need to be tested . I think I'll be fine though because I got the ticks out within 24 hours .
Check your dogs often too - mine got Lymes 2 years ago and that sucked and also was expensive to cure !

oh hell yeah you can die from Lyme. and here's the fun part: if they don't catch it in time to treat you with an oral antibiotic and it really attacks your system, you get to carry around a little bag with a pump in it...that is attached to an iv (a picc line) that is sewn into your arm, runs though your chest and ends a few centimeters from your heart. this pumps you with hardcore antibiotics six times a day. then you do NOTHING for six to eight weeks other than eat, play video games and hope there are no lingering effects.

no, i've never had the Lyme, but what i'm going through now, in terms of treatment, is pretty much spot on for what someone would have to go though. if i ever did get lyme in the future, i'd be screwed b/c my system is compromised.

that said, i hate ticks. blood sucking agents of satan.
