Car-spotting thread

Yeah dude. 911C4S, Panamera GTS, Macan S, Cayenne, Taycan Turbo S.

It was a little more tame than the BMW M event a few years ago. But we still hit about 110mph on the back straight in the 911. I was hoping to get some seat time in the new 718 GTS/GT4 but no luck. It was a much more informal event than the BMW one. It was strictly for Paul Miller Porsche customers (still no idea why he invited me; I guess he had the space), so only about 40 people there.

The new 911 is so comfy, so fast, so buttoned down it's incredible. I was a little disappointed in the laps until I looked down and was doing 95mph one car length off another 911.

The PannyGTS was cool but not for $150,000. I'd grab an S7 if I was in that market. Macan S was very, very nice but honestly once it's rolling it's not much quicker than the base 4-cyl Macan. The Taycan is silly fast. 0 to 124 in 9 seconds.

when are you trading in the M2??

How horrible are the costs on those Porsche's for maintenance?

I'm curious if you get killed on repair costs or not on those. It always seems like there's general known issues with known solutions. But that could mean serious $$.

Stock shocks that wear out? Whatever. Timing chain breaking prematurely and losing an engine? Less fun.

Asking for a friend.

Based on the research I've done it's not that bad. Obviously not Toyota prices, but barring something killing the engine, I can live with it. The biggest change from what I'm used to is that you actually have to do the scheduled maintenance or you can be screwed. The older Caymans have pretty much stopped depreciating. The only thing that affects price is mileage and condition.

I dunno. I'll definitely be paying attention to Rennlist/BAT/dealers this winter to see if something right pops up. 991.1 GT3 or a 991.2 Carrera T maybe? Even a base 991 Carrera is more than enough, really. The Cayman long gearing in the manuals really turned me off a bit and I'm not sure I'd want to go PDK in a Cayman. If I ordered a new GTS/GT4 I think I'd still be looking at GT3s, so that tells me something. I dunno...much to digest considering I've been very happy with the M2 and I've had it almost 4 years (which is an eternity in my garage).

This just popped up on BAT, Plus an 09 low mileage about 3 miles from my shop, Both too good, too soon. I don't think I'm ready to pull the trigger yet.

Damn, that's a gorgeous blue! What does that go for in the end? $40,000?

Good question. The maintenance is expensive. No doubt about it. But for a second car that gets serviced once a year, I can swallow that. I wouldn't want to daily a Porsche though. That could hurt.

The 911 and Cayman are pretty reliable but repairs are expensive. Thankfully there are a number of specialty shops that are cheaper than the dealers (not cheap; cheaper) once the warranty is out. Is it worse than holding onto my M2 after the warranty expires in November? Probably not significantly. Extending the BMW B2B warranty for another 3 years is $6000. I'll take my chances!

I think I saw a receipt for a Porsche dealer 911 Turbo 40K service, which is the big one. Filters, brake fluid, alignment, plugs, blah blah. $4000. I think that included two rear tires. That's probably $800 on a Chevy, LOL.

Low thirties based on prior sales.

IMHO, you really have to think of two maintenance numbers when dealing with something like a used Porsche. What's it going to cost for everyday stuff and how bad can it get ("hmm, that hole wasn't in the block earlier")? My buddy just bought (it was put on the truck in Chicago yesterday) a 2013 911 Carrera 4S Cab. He's probably going to buy a warranty from Fidelity. 3yrs/36k/$3600. $100/mo for peace of mind.

Been going thru all the forums. There seem to be way more satisfied owners of early Caymans than horror stories. While I'd love a 911, it's too big a $$ gamble for me.

IMS is talked about WAY more than it actually happens. Like S55 crank hubs, NSX snaprings, GT350 oil consumption, etc etc.

They say about 5% were affected and many have been repaired already. Trying to decide between a low mileage car or one that was actually driven. People say you have to watch for neglected maintenance on cars that were only driven 1000 miles per year.

At first glance it looked like there were too many to choose from. Stay online to long and you'll know every car for sale in the country.

Definitely would agree that an earlier car with some miles is much less of a gamble than one that was barely driven. That said, no IMS to worry about with a 987.2 and also other reliability improvements.

There are very few 987.2 out there. Supposedly very few sold due to economy those years.

Pretty cool video explaining the depreciation of the earlier Caymans.

Or, just pick a pretty color.

With Bike N Gear talking about Porsche's. I've been thinking a 996 as they seem like a fair bit of bang for the buck and I don't mind the ugly head lamps.

Then to be a little different another "value" German car an E46 M3 vert has been on my mind lately: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2002-bmw-m3-convertible-38/

Any one have any experience on the E46 with S54 engine. I feel the high pitch inline 6 would be a fun compliment to the 6.7 Cummins I daily (and the 2.8 Cummins that fingers crossed will be running in something this winter 😉 )

I feel they have aged well visually. I know the hardtop would be the better performer but I just want a top down fun driver. And I haven't seen many on the road which is a plus for me too.
