Car-spotting thread

Wishing a warm get well soon to our resident automotive guru @Dingo.....Look on the bright side, at least you wont have to fix any GM products for a little while.

So a little follow up with my oil restristors in the heads

I put everything back together, ....ran my oil primer and im still getting a massive amount of oil up to the head....like if I run the drill for 10 seconds so much oil is coming out that its close to overflowing the head with the valve covers off.....the .090 jet is like a starting point....Anyway I started engine and it runs perfectly smooth and lovely....perfectly quiet, no tapping, etc....some smoke on start up..figured it might be residule..its not blue smoke, its more greyish....I first set the timing at 12deg....engine warms up, smoke seems to be mostly gone. I dialed the timing back to 9-10deg base...smoke returns.....moved it back to 12, it goes away...hmm. I run the engine in the garage for a good 20min making sure it was fully warm...at 12 deg...I could bring the engine up to say 3000 rpm, hold it for 10-15 sec...crack the throttle to maybe 5k and let it come back to idle....no smoke.....prior to the restrictors, LOTS of smoke.....

I pulled the #4 and #1 plug after this test....still oily, however, car is smoking much less and valve covers are not leaking now....so I think im on the right path, but not quite there yet. The timing being tied to the smoke is confusing me other than the engine is just burning this oil a little better with more timing? not 100% sure.

So im going to drop it down to a .070 jet and maybe in the winter time change the valve seals....they are 20 years old now and probably a little dried out

You seem to be going in the right direction. Grey smoke is oil getting past the exhaust guide and not completely burning. Intake seals will smoke blue because that oil ignited. Are the seals the stock umbrella type? Those dont really do a great job compared to a seal that wipes the stem. Anyway to see inside the cover if its filling up? Plus you should drive it to burn off any residual oil.

Get your Hunterdon county on!

Ron had been organizing car shows in Flemington for the last bunch of years.
Usually a couple per summer on Main St - trying something new here.
And Northlandz train exhibit is impressive also.

Last seen by me on Colts Neck on 34. Now at a shop west of Englishtown. It looks like someone washed it. I think @jimvreeland saw it at the same spot but I'm too lazy to check.

New stereo installed. It's a Pioneer AVH-3500NEX. I did not realize until I installed it that it does not have HD Radio. It didn't even occur to me to check. I would gladly forgo the useless DVD player for HD Radio. Stupid.

The factory radio (a Becker) had a locating post in the back. DIN being a standard, you would think I could transfer it to the new radio but the hole, while in the same spot, was for an M4 vs M5 bolt. I drilled and tapped to fit but I would prefer not to use power tools on my electronics.

Still have to remember how to install the glove compartment, with nearly 20 individual fasteners. They must have let the intern design that one.

This is a good question on the seals....so back in 2000...I took the engine out of the car and set the heads to a machine shop and they did some port work on the exhaust side, but while they were there, the guy just put in the heavier valve springs I needed for my bigger cam I was upgrading too....Dont remember what he used....ill look again when i change this holley jet. But either way, they are probably going to need to be changed. I think with the smaller jet I can at least reduce it to the point where it will drive normally.

I thought about cutting a section out of the top of my oil valve covers so that I could look in when the engine is running....from what i have been reading, a .070 jet is about as low as you want to go without risking the outboard rockers getting oil starved. I know with the .090, TONS of oil was coming and overwhelming the drainback holes with my oil primer and the engine cold.

This is monticello... nothing is a replica
I didnt think so, but 288 Gtos are kinda unicorn-ish....Although they are not like cobras in that most people dont even know what they are looking at, so why are you making a replica or some ferrari 308 with weird headlights? 🙂

This is monticello... nothing is a replica. They typically have some wild rides in there, and they are either member cars or on loan. Fun fact, my client had previously owned 2 gto's at once. I'll have to see if I can dig up the pic. View attachment 137974View attachment 137975
This ^.

I went there for 24hrs of Lemons years ago. Not sure why they let junkers on their track. Anyway, Glickenhaus led it off with his P4/5.

so were you driving at all?

Yeah dude. 911C4S, Panamera GTS, Macan S, Cayenne, Taycan Turbo S.

It was a little more tame than the BMW M event a few years ago. But we still hit about 110mph on the back straight in the 911. I was hoping to get some seat time in the new 718 GTS/GT4 but no luck. It was a much more informal event than the BMW one. It was strictly for Paul Miller Porsche customers (still no idea why he invited me; I guess he had the space), so only about 40 people there.

The new 911 is so comfy, so fast, so buttoned down it's incredible. I was a little disappointed in the laps until I looked down and was doing 95mph one car length off another 911.

The PannyGTS was cool but not for $150,000. I'd grab an S7 if I was in that market. Macan S was very, very nice but honestly once it's rolling it's not much quicker than the base 4-cyl Macan. The Taycan is silly fast. 0 to 124 in 9 seconds.
