I am doing the TotB, this will be first road race. I see there are a few feed zones, do we refill our own bottles there or is this where people hand us new bottles as we ride by? What if we have no one to hand us a bottle? Any help is appreciated.

People hand you a bottle as you go by, there is no time to fill your own bottles during this race. I carry 3 bottles and avoid the feedzone hand off frenzy. I have two bottle cages and I put a bottle in my back pocket. Once I drink the first bottle I take the one out of my jersey and put it in the cage. 3 bottles has always been enough for me.

Iggy nailed it. IF you post through all your bottles early, most likely you can grab a neutral bottle. That's a crap shoot - could be heed, cytomax or water. All are better than nothing 🙂

Iv'e always brought my significant other to the race to hand off my bottles. Here's a pic from Feed Zone#1. The feed zones are on up hills so that the group is forced to slow down to a reasonable pace for handoffs.

If you don't have that luxury, don't worry, they have neutral support. I recommend 3 bottles. Two on bike and one in your Jersey pocket. If you think you're going to drink more than 3, you'll likely toss your empty before grabbing a new one. Try not to hit anyone and only do this in the feed zone. Not just anywhere on the course 😀

Good luck with your race!

Try and take advantage of neutral bottles and don't plan on carrying all the water for the whole race. You will notice the extra weight by the end of the race!

Or you can be like James Pearl and come through so fast that you mess up your perfect water bottle handoff 😛

Meant to post this sooner but I wanted to thank everyone for their input. I ended up with two bottle in their cages and one in my center jersey pocket, never noticed it was there, worked out perfectly.

How did you do, did you like the course. Would u do it again next year? did u stay over?

Loved the course, very tough but very happy I did it. I didn't stay over, left my house at 6 and got home at 8:30 pm, long day. If I forget how much pain I was in from leg cramps I will do it again next year : )

But if you start with more weight, you can drop the ballast when you need that extra push for the finish. :hmmm:
