The 2026 January BIYF

Great way to wrap up the month. One of those days were the plan all comes together and I had great legs right from the start. Did a 23 mile solo loop before the group ride then did the 47 with the group. We had about 16 people and some good pacelines and then split off into groups I went with the slightly faster group and felt terrific. If we didn’t start the group ride at 11am I felt like I had plenty left in the tank for more miles. But I was starving for some real food so went home.

Had to do the pump sprayer hot water soap and rinse the bike when I got back it was just filthy.

2/28 Fitness test part 1 https://www.strava.com/activities/17557242197

Base line test as I'm starting with a coach that uses other data and algorithms besides FTP in his training plans. The protocol is kind of long/complicated so I screwed up in a couple of places. Part of the baseline data was getting a DEXA scan. I thought the Garmin Index was pretty good at fat% but it turns out it was 42% off. Good news is that it was over the real value. 13% is pretty good, now, if I can only put some muscle in my legs, that would be great.

curious what your actual numbers are (garmin vs dexa), when my fitbit scale died i bought the garmin one and the bf readings were different by 8-10%. I read somewhere that if you take the BF number from the garmin and edit the value (to your DEXA number for example) it would calibrate the scale. worth a try.

sounds like 13% is the actual and 21% is the garmin reading?

Ha. Interesting. I'll try it out. The Garmin Index reading right before I headed out for the scan was 18.4%, so 5.4% above; that's 41.5% off. I'm planning to do 2 more Dexa scans at least, one each time I do these tests until August. My hope is that with 3 data points, and similar protocols (time fasting, time of day, etc.) I'll be able to find an offset value to then use the Garmin number going forward.

Finally got in a ride on the last day of Meteorological Winter.
Epic day on the beach with some hike-a-bike on the bay side. Extra low tide made for great access to tough spots and places I've never been.
Picked up 2 balloons and a weird wire fishing thing.
200 people watching zero seals 🦭🙄
No 5-0

definitely interested in what values you come up with, although your numbers reflect pretty closely (from my recollection) the difference between the fitbit and garmin scales.

Also (related) if anyone knows where you can get a DEXA scan for a reasonable price in north jersey post up.

I keep getting ads for one in Basking Ridge. I think it’s $150. There’s also Rutgers.

I was going to recommend some DEXA Fit in NJ (they have 20 locations) because I paid $160 for TWO scans but I see that over there they are 3X more expensive than in CO! The machine seems the same, and it's the same company, same services, same protocol, etc I wonder what's going on.

It’s NJ. One of the least healthy states in the country, they probably get 1 person a week in there 😂 Unlike CO where 90% of the population are professional athletes.
