Yes. For the most part, you'll be fine with your SS front Ring, though there are a few out there that are too fat to run with a narrow geared frame. I've used the Truvativ rings and I think I actually have one installed now on my 1x9 setup and they work just fine.
For chain retention, there are a number of options out there. A lot of people like the chain keepers that have a cage like a FD.. I think Paul makes one, MRP has one, and there are definitely others.
If you're looking to do it on the cheap, I've run an N-gear jumpstop on the inside and any old bashguard on the outside, with great success for the past few years.
