Question on tubless maintenance

I converted my tires to tubless last season and wanted to get it ready for this season. Not sure what, if anything I need to do. I know you need to add some of the solution over time, but how do you know when you need to do it? Anything else that needs to be done? Thanks.

Your sealant is surely dried up. You should add more either by popping the tire off or using an injector through the valve.

Thanks - do I need to remove the old sealant or can I leave it in there? Will leaving it in casue any issues/damage? Finally you mentioned injecting through the valve. How long would this take as oppposed to taking off the tire. As you can probably tellI had the LBS do the install so I am not sure what is involved. If I remember correctly the process for going tubless includes adding tape/seal around the bead.

If you have tubeless rims it should be easy. If you have a conversion strip on non tubeless tires, it can get more difficult getting an old tire to re seal if you take it off. I sometimes get a lot of dried sealant balls stuck on the bead. I would recommend cleaning the rim and soaping the tires to put it back on. Stans sealant is good for 1 - 2 months, not sure about other brands..

one thing to check before you get to crazy with removing tires as well is to see if you have removable valve cores. you can remove them and install sealant through the valve stem.

i got Stans and caffe latex sealant, which should i use?
pros and cons to each?

Pros is the caffee bubbles up to a foam when wheels are in motion. Both seem to have a 2-3 month life before drying. The key that I have found is adding glitter to the mix. Either sealant alone does not seem to work on anything larger then a pinhole. Glitter adds a little extra to aid on sealing pesky leaks. I personally been running caffee with glitter for almost a year now and in a few different tire setups and I likey...

Glitter, huh? pretty clever. so what color are you using?

mmmm, I'm gonna go get some pink sparklies for my tires.

As for the dried sealant, the bulk of it will be in the form of another worldly, tumble weed looking thing that you should remove from the tire. There will be a film on the inside of your tire, which can be a PITA to remove fully, so I typically leave it.

Shoot...I didn't realize this stuff only lasts a few months.

Weather has a lot to do with it and you probably can get six months or better but good practice is about 3 months in add about half of the normal amount. Topping it off if you will. Removable core is best but Caffee's injector adapter works well to push past the valve core.
