hey guys i was wondering what kind of clipless pedals i should get since it is my first time with them. I was thinking about get a pair that also allows me to clip out and ride them in really super tech and narly stuff or just i if want to take my bike out for casual ride I do not have to clip in. i am also looking for shoes for them too . any suggetions . thanks 😀

i was thinking about these pedals

and these for shoes

IMHO i wouldnt go out geting the mallets especially if your new to the whole "clipless" thing. They are very expensive and heavy. For a beginner i would go for some spds. shimano has something like the mallets except and a much cheeper price and if im not mistaken, someone on the board is selling a pair like them. As for shoes, I love my sidi dominator 5's. again IMHO i would get yourself a shoe that will last with you for a bit. this way you save money and have a good shoe in the long run. 😎

I agree with Tim. I also just started out with clipless this year. Didnt want to spend much (I'm not a pro), just want to get my feet wet and see the benefits of clipless.

To start out, I bought the Cannondale CODA SPD pedal on ebay for 29.99 (comes with platform attachment) and I bought Nashbar multi-purpose shoe (on sale), i think it was 20 bucks, you have to wait for a sale for the shoes, they can get expensive or buy a used one here on the forums or fleabay. Happy SPD-hunting! 😀

You can get the Mallets on sale somewhere most of the time. I bought a pair for my bro-in-law and IMO they are geared more toward an all-mountain bike than a hardtail or short travel XC bike.

i figured that i could get the mallets on sale if i hunt around for them . I have gaint trance x4 with 5 inches of travel so i think i can get away with the mallets on my bike 😛 . so the six six one shoes will not last that long Tim . i figured since they were six six one they would last . i have their knee pads and they have been hold up so i figured the shoes must be good . i guess not lol😕

TIME Z Mountain Bike Pedal

Chainlove has occasionally TIME Z Mountain Bike Pedals for like 41+6 for delivery. I was looking at them, but I think my cycling skill is not high enough for clipless.

it all depends on your type of riding. it might feel a little awkward being a narrow shoe on a wide pedal. just my opinion though😀

Thats what I started on this past spring...Had a few mishaps in the beginning but everything all good now..I just unclip whenever I feel my skill isnt up to par but have been finding lately that staying clip in and carrying speed is better then uncliping/slowing down.

I want to get new pedals as well, but I'm afraid after watching all those utube videos with people falling down on clipsless. I guess this fear eventually gets away, but for now I'll stick to platforms (btw, any recommendations in around 50$ zone?)- I am MTB noobie.

i have two sets of the shimano m520 pedals and i'm very happy with them. i bought it from campmor for around $50. http://www.rei.com/product/705311

for shoes, i have the shimano mt32, which was on sale from campmor for $40 a few months ago. http://www.rei.com/product/783235

the shoes i thought was just temporary to see if i like clipless or not. my plan was to upgrade to better shoes if i liked clipless, which it turns out i do. the shoes have been so nice and comfy i actually don't even plan on buying a more expensive one. i'll snag another pair or two if it's on sale again.
