mountain biking ruins solitude for others?

You could go 4x4 ing. But thats for people that smoke.

I'm going this weekend with some other Rover heads up in MA. Besides the Pine Barrons, NJ does not have any places to wheel. I don't smoke but enjoy driving trail with my truck. Using proper driving techniques, your rig and trails won't be damaged.

That Montana things stinks to hear. I think there was an article about it in BIKE a few months ago. Grouping pedal bikes with dirt bikes? WTF? Too funny about the solitude point as I've snuck up on people many of times on the trail. And on over 150 miles of trail in MT? I'd think it would be nice to see another person every few days or so.

I think Huber might be going in a similar direction. How was it worded at the last trail maintenance? "Not banned but also not saying that bikes are allowed there" All with the snicker, snicker from some hikers and horse riders. O well - I just kept working shelving up a section of new trail.

where ya headed don? i did some wheelin' out there, out off of route 2. i think near pittsfield? great stuff.

and yeah, this sucks for sure. MT probably has 11ty billion miles of trail that people can ride but it seems like someone snuck up on the wrong person during a moment of "solitude"

...but to the OP...dude, not to sound like a dick but hikers out number us AND the horsie people out cash us. that's the main reason why i smile, wave, say hi, ring my bell, do whatever to ever is necessary to both make people aware of me and be nice. to many of these people, you're just a thug in baggies or a prick in spandex. don't live up to it.

I was thinking of this when I saw that trail work being done.

what about some stupid lolly gagging, headphone wearing hiker that ruins the solitude of my ride when they won't get the f out of my way and they can't hear me because of the headphones?

Might be the same place - Ma Bell Road in North Adams. Not sure if this would make the non-4WD people happier but supposedly this was a road was stopped being maintained so it wasn't a bunch of rednecks tearing up the woods.

I agree, I've done hikes plenty of times before and my daughter rides horses so I'm not looking to revolt against anyone. Just looking to enjoy the woods - just on a bike.

Wow! I never realized how much hate people have in this country. I am fresh to the sport, but not to the outdoors or the woods. I have raced XC ATV's for about 5 years and I cannot tell you how many spots have been shut down. Even with our tougher sound regulations that we ahve put in place, we still are loosing spots. Thats one reason why I am making the gradual switch over to the MTB side of things

Now I am seeing that people hate MTB's too. Whats with this? What does it cause a little 2" wide trail through the woods that is barely noticiable? This kinda of information makes me sick and I cannot believe that people have so much hate for others.

It's not about hate for others. It's about love of self. :hmmm:

+1,000,000,000 on this. Then when you finally get their attention and scare the shit out of them, they give you a dirty look. They should consider themselves lucky it was a polite mtb rider and not the 6 mile bear. Or a drunk from the 6 mile bar.

I have been told that Mountain biking at Huber is / has been considered to be not allowed. However it is not enforced or posted that you cannot ride. So id say if you want to ride thier continue to do so but please follow IMBA's rules of the triail and yes try to be cordial and kind. Your actions can and will have a ripple affect at all MCPS Parks.

Thanks
kinid and cordial

I'm not sure that hikers outnumber bikers any more. last weekend I only saw a few hikers, a couple of which were merely looking for a makeout spot. Point being that many of them are not really "hikers" anyway.

If they want solitude, ban the hikers too. I am sure they are disruptive to the animals, plants and insects. The solitude excuse is BS and they know it.

solitude, that's what you bedroom is for ,sit there and stare at the wall if you don't want to see other people. Hey,arn't other hikers disrupting the solitude?helidrop mr/mrs solitude off in the middle of the 20 square miles and see how they feel about the first mountainbiker they see with an extra powerbar and a camelback. solitary is punishment for those that are already in jail

We advocate for multi-use trail networks and can show that trail design and construction is for the most part independent of use ( same for hike or bike). This simplifies management for the park and opens more trail to us. The other concern with landmanagers is the social impacts. It is often brought up that bikers startle hikers, don't yield and so become a percieved safety risk. When presented as first hand accounts, it is hard to overcome that bias. We have made great progress on addressing the physical impacts, our access will always hinge on our ability to educate from within and show this can work.
