Courtesy of CDC Because of the extra-mild winter this year, the early spring could bring an unwelcome guest: the tick. Be warned: The warmer weather is good news for people and pets who want to be outside, but beware of an uptick of the hard-to-detect pest.
The basic reason is that the eggs will hatch sooner. "Eggs are already in the ground, but this is the time that they will be coming out in great numbers," said Pollie Rueda, an entomologist stationed at the Smithsonian and Walter Reed Army institute of Research. He noted that the normal tick season is from May through August, but with the 70-degree temperatures in some places, the ticks may get a jump on the season.

Ticks that are already out and about are the visible adult, sesame-sized ones, noted Kristen Nordlund of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Think of these little buggers as the arachnid form of vampires. They hang out in blades of grass for a host to come along -- a mouse, a dog, or a human -- to attach themselves and feed off your blood over days, or until discovered, and they often leave disease behind -- sometimes multiple illnesses.

The big concern for humans, according to the CDC, is that most tick infections occur during the "nymph" stage. Those recently hatched ticks are the size of the period at the end of this sentence, and they have four sets of legs and the ability to suck your blood. Because they are essentially invisible, preying on a host can easily go undetected.

In most cases, the tick must be attached for 36-48 hours or more before the Lyme disease bacterium can be transmitted. Infections from ticks, such as Lyme disease (plus babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and anaplasmosisis), are on the rise and are difficult to diagnose. The symptoms are awful: from headaches to long-term joint pain and even heart problems.

Since 1992, the cases of Lyme disease have doubled, according to the CDC, and more than 21,000 cases are reported every year.

The CDC is conducting tests on actual households to confirm if spraying a pesticide in the backyard helps to reduce the incidence of human disease. Check its website for good information on preventive measures.

Thanks for posting this Sandman. Good info here and everyone should take precautions. These little buggers knocked me on my a$$ last year...no fun.

Case of the creepy crawlies!!!

I found one tick on my leg in the parking lot yesterday, minor advantage of being hirsute is the buggers take a while to reach the skin and pulled it off. No biggie.

But later after a shower I found one behind my knee and it's been giving me the heebie jeebies all day thinking there might be more I missed. Blech.😡

Oh, important safety tip. Don't drop your shorts, back up to your almost asleep wife and ask her to check your furry crack for ticks. It really doesn't go well.😱

Anyone ever seen or pull off the smaller deer ticks? So far I've only had the normal wood aka dog tick. Dunno if I've ever seen the deer type, unless it was an adult I assumed was a wood.
Thanks.

Oh, didn't realize this was in the south jersey section. I'm not allowed. 🙂

Yeah, I have found a few deer ticks, but mostly the bigger dog ticks. It is obviously much harder to find the deer ticks and they usually go unnoticed...

I guess I'll have to start showering right when I get home. Stupid bugs!
Thanks.

Ive been unfortunate enough to pull about 45 ticks off of me already this year. Only about 7 were attached though. Several were the deer tick nymphs that are really hard to see. No larger then the end of pin. I've come to the conclusion that they love off deep woods. I'm afraid people are going to think I'm going through some sort of withdrawl as I freak out and have to check every little tickle thinking that it's another tick. Seriously uncool.

where are you riding? I use Deep Woods (blue can, a bit more DEET) and only have had to pull off 1 tick so far this year.

i use spray with parmathone, probably spelling error there. it works great. bad thing is you cant spray it on your skin. Living in central jersey to south jersey we have a little bugger called the chigger, some refer to them as red bugs, works great for them too. I spray it on my shoes, socks shorts pants and shirt. this stuff they say last for several weeks, but i apply everytime i go to the woods.

Most have come from the fresh trails at belleplain(riding and working) and from the trails off of 49. Ticks and chiggers are abundant down here in the sticks.

I pulled 2 off me on weds at Estell. Pretty much got them as soon as they showed. I had been stopping to clear stuff on the trail though too. They we the larger ones this time around. Checking later on didn't turn up any more, but i'm always paranoid that i missed one. End up checking any weird tingle i feel for the next 24 hours. Spraying down heavily with Off Deep Woods Sport (blue can).
