Since a majority of the biking parks are covered in ice does anyone have intel on areas that are clear for hiking? I need to get my feral kids out of the house tomorrow. Somerset/Morris county areas preferred.

Reviving this. In addition to biking, I like activities that get me out into the outdoors, including hiking.

This winter I invested in a pair of crampons, the type that you place over your boots. I got the chance to put them to use multiple times this season such as at 6 mile and Watchung.

These are the slip on crampons I own in action at 6 mile. Made a world of difference, especially on sheet ice!

Yeah, suffice to say, I like to hike year round. This past weekend alone, I was at Palisades and then at Jenny Jump.

This was taken Saturday near the gwb side of Palisades Park. Such great views. My family and I did a short loop.

And then Sunday morning I was at Jenny Jump. It was cloudy but the leafless trees offered unobstructed views of the landscape.

And check out this townhome sized glacial erratic! A crack is forming down the middle of it. Maybe in a few thousand more years and freeze thaw cycles, it will split fully into two.

If others have good hiking pics or reports to share we can post them here, perhaps. I hike just about every week, especially if trail conditions are not conducive to biking.

No longer in NJ/NY area, but I hike a lot.... We're in WNC so Pisgah is my hiking playground but we've also done some big hikes like Grand Canyon and we're planning a trip in May out to Moab / Zion so I'll have a bunch of updates from there on my blog.

From one of my last full moon hikes... I took the telescope out to Big Rock in DuPont:

For folks who hike during cold season how do you keep your feet warm? During wild/warm weather I hike a lot.
I have more trouble biking in extreme weather. Have good quality waterproof boots rated for different temps. Some people just need heated socks. Which boots are you wearing?

Thick wool socks.

I tend to be cold and often have cold hands/feet. Good thick wool socks work well for me and I only hike in trail runners. That includes when I need to use shoe spikes on snow/ice.
