Greyhound/Amtrak riders

For those that take Greyhound bus lines or Amrtrak every so often ..

Is it mandatory on Greyhound that the bike be boxed up? Has anyone traveled to Springfield, MA using Amtrak .. do you if the lines have bike racks available or does it need to be boxed up as well like Greyhound?

I ask because I wanna catch the bus/train up and ride out when I get there. I don't ned to be hassled with packing the bike everytime. Besides, I get out late so most bike shops are closed by the time I need to board and carrying a humangous cardboard box around doesn't make any sense.

Recommendations?

Google is your friend.

http://www.greyhound.ca/en/travel_information/baggage.shtml ... see second bullet under "baggage restrictions".

Google isn't really my friend since I already checked - hence why I asked if it was mandatory that it be boxed up. I even tried Yahoo if it makes you feel good.

I'm basically asking for experience in being able to just put my bike under the bus.

The first link says boxing is mandatory on the 'hound.

Not that it is relevant anymore, but I worked for Trailways & Greyhound in my distant (and I mean distant) past and non-boxed bikes were not allowed.

Now if you're not boarding/ending/stopping at a terminal, I suppose a driver could break the rules...but I would never count on that.

Right from the R&Rs-
5. Bicycles in Baggage Service: Bicycles checked into baggage must be boxed. Bicycle boxes are available from Greyhound Courier Express at selected terminals for $10 each (plus GST). You will be charged the oversize charge of $30 plus GST.

Bicycles are carried unboxed on the following routes, subject to space, and no "Travel With" charge is applied:

i) Vancouver - Whistler ($10 charge)
ii) Vancouver - Squamish/Garibaldi ($5 charge)

Find out if it is the same driver for the route and toss a few $ his way. Might let it slide. Just make sure you don't blame him for any damage.

have you try chinese bus operator, crazy cheap and no hassle with storing your bike just stash under the compartment and you good to go.no boxes required,..but all at your own risk.http://fungwahbus.com
