Hey, the name's Tim, I'm 47 and just getting back into riding after many, many years of being inactive (mostly due to auto related injuries suffered 6 years ago). I got heavily into mountain biking during the 80s and early 90s, astride my faithful steed...an 86 Raleigh Seneca MountainTour sporting an oversize frame that I bought new for $360. Granted, it wasn't a Ritchie but it definitely served me well! I still have it, albeit a little worse for wear, and would love to bring it back to life someday!

Nowadays I'm getting back into the swing of things with a *most definitely* entry level ride, a Mongoose Deception 29er...I know, I know, Walmart's the source of all evil, cheap bikes will only cause undue frustration and possibly life ending injuries, if I'm going to ride ANYTHING it should be from a LBS, etc. etc. etc. Well, I'm getting by (barely) on a fixed income due to being placed on permanent disability four years ago, and do not have the funds to invest in a bike that costs nearly as much as my mortgage! I've shopped around, done tons of research, and in the end found the Deception to be a solid, fairly well designed frame with functional (albeit cheap) components that will keep me rolling for at least the first season. Granted, many of the parts on the Mongoose *are* crap, but it does have one saving grace...I can ride it now, and the frame is BRUTALLY solid! Well worth the initial asking price as I see it ($199), and I will upgrade *everything* as I need to, eventually building myself a capable 29er over the course of time! This is assuming my busted body will allow me to continue to the point where I will need a better ride...if not, then all I'm out is $200, and even then I can just pass it on to my son.

Sorry about the rant, glad to be here, and hope to learn a bit about building a nice bike and where I can ride it in our great state!

Glad to hear you are back on the bike.
As long as you are having fun, that's all that counts!
Bienvenido!

Welcome to the site and back to riding... I say so long as the bike has two wheels and will get you rolling it will do the job! Have fun out there!

Dont get too down on the bike. If it makes you happy and gets you around the trails then its a good bike. Granted its a tad heavy, but it wont take much time to get you monies worth. Im sure theres a few $6k bikes hanging in the garage somewhere that are neglected or under appreciated, thats where a real waste of $$ is. Good luck out there.

my second ride was a mongoose after my first ride was horked. that mongoose lasted me years. i donated it so its hopefully still putting in miles somewhere in central america. welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard and back! In your neck of the woods that bike will serve you well. See if you can get out to Allaire for the group rides once they start up again. Great bunch of guys down there.

welcome aboard dude road a mongoose for a while my self with the same mind set upgrade this and that..just ride it like you stole it..
come on up to allaire we can give you a tour..

Welcome back in the saddle again.
If it works for you ride it.. When it does not and becomes unsafe get ride of it..

One thing I can recommended is to join JORBA, and if you can when time comes.
Come down to the group ride on Tuesday late afternoon Allaire. Great fun great people, great way to get back into MTB riding.

Good Luck and have fun

Tim,

Dont worry about what your riding as long as it rolls - get satisfaction when you start passing guys on bikes that are way beyond their abilities

Hopefully MTBing will help your old injuries. I know after three knee operations, herniated disks & a dislocated hip from years of high school sports and BMX as a kid... MTBing was the cure to all aches and pains...loosing 35lbs from riding didn't hurt either. I'm 42 now and I feel like I am getting younger after riding about 3yrs. Granted...you'll probably get new aches and pains (I took a beating learning to use clipless pedals) but at least the old ones will be gone.🙂

Have fun on what ever you ride.

Welcome!
If you want a nice easy start, come up to Mercer and I'll give you a tour. Wharton is also a nice place to start.
See you on the trails!

Like everyone else said...all that matters is that you're happy doing it. I just went on a rant before about fs guys bashing hardtails, Doesn't bother me any because I'm happy with what I got, I'm riding, and having fun doing it...that's all that matters!
