First Ride

Went on my first mountain bike ride at 6:30 this morning at Lewis Morris park. I know they are rated as beginner trails but to be honet I needed to work. I thought it had a good deal of climbing, smallish rocks, and roots. I started at the lake and was on the yellow, red, green , blue, and orange trails not knowing really where I was going but ended up back at the lake with the help of the map I had. I guess I better stay there for a long time before I try any other trails.

Even if LM is listed as beginner trails, I can see them giving a beginner trouble in spots. I think the most beginner friendly trails somewhat close to you would be six mile, mercer and allaire. If you can make it, hit up one of the tuesday night beginner rides at allaire. Beginners can learn a lot from those rides.

It's not really a beginner park in terms of fitness. More of the trails though some are loose rocks like you note. The others listed are flatter and smoother. LM is pretty small too so it's less of a destination for many.

agree. Lewis Morris would be a bore/ too easy for people who like gnarly trails but it has lots of ups and downs so just about any rider, I think, can get a good workout at LM. I really like that park, too bad I live so far away. lots of ups with some decent climbs and not too technical...just the way I like it 😉

if you live in Somerset County - try 6 Mile Run. much less hilly. not technical. big park so you can build your fitness. as suggested, Allaire is also a very good park for beginners (but that would be a bit of a hike for you).
