ear phones for riding

Does anyone have any suggestions on what brand to go with for good ear phones for riding that dont fall out of your ear? I was at target the other day and saw skull candy then i saw another brand that got me thinking about what to buy.

I bought some Philips headphones that were supposedly designed to be sweatproof. They kind of, twist in to your ear. Although I dont use ear buds when I ride, I do use them for a lot of other stuff and they dont ever come loose.

i feel like riding with earphones of any type would be a problem, especially on the road as you need to hear what is going on around you and earphones obstruct your ability to do that.

i know for a fact that people who run with headphones on are often 100% oblivious to what is going on around them, and have even been told by my friends when i say somethinga bout having seen them and said hi 'what areyou talkinga bout, i didnt hear anything'. just my .02

i will throw in that i use the bose earbuds and they fit and stay pretty well for anything that i have tried them with (in case you are dead set on this idea)

I completely agree. Stay away from headphones when you ride. Its just dangerous to you and everyone around you.

But if your dead set on getting headphones. Check out the Sennheiser line for ADIDAS. I have a pair and they NEVER fall out of my hears. Sounds quality is awesome.

You can also take a look at a pair of Motorola bluetooth headphones if you are hooking it up to an iphone or droid. But you might have fitment issues with a helmet.

In the end you should just stay away from headphones. Enjoy whats out there.

Search the forums cause this topic has been discussed so many times..

I use SkullCandy Chops. They stay in, are comfy, cheap, and have decent sound quality. I only wear headphones, when I know the trails are empty, weekday mornings when the lot is empty. The volume is low enough to hear a dog or rider approaching.

These.

They have a small bendable loop that goes over your ear where the wire meets the buds. They come with a bunch of different sized rubber cups to fit your ear. Sound is awesome once you get the right cup and twist them around a bit to get the fit right. The loop that goes over your ear is small enough that you can still wear your glasses.

They block out the outside world (bonus!), so keep that in mind. Or, you could just ride faster so you never have to worry about anyone coming up behind you.

this is kind of sad but i never knew they made wireless headphones until today haha. i just bought a laptop last week and didnt know that all laptops come with WI FI. i got home and realized i forgot to get wireless internet stuff then saw that the computer was connected to the internet. im only 26 and just found this stuff out haha

I have always used headphones while riding. i need something to keep me pumped. i never have them loud for safety reasons plus my hearing is not the greatest. again im only 26 and my hearing isnt great. kind of sad haha. so i keep them pretty low for those 2 reasons. even at the gym they arent that loud. just loud even to somewhat keep the crappy gym music out of my head haha. it is a good survival tactitic with the wife though haha

Rode only once with headphones. Clip-on ipod shuffle fell off, hit the spokes in the front wheel and flew into the leaves. Half-hour later, a hiker wandering by spotted it twenty feet from where I was looking. Never again!

That said, I love my Klipsch Image S4 headphones. Noise cancelling too, so all I see is my wifes' lips moving...😀😛

Selectivehearing

Well with the wife thats called selective hearing LMAO... What did you say Babe?... Then on the flip side i can hear her whispering at 300m ...... I actually went and had a Hearing test done and after the results were good the Dr asked me if I ever thought it might be in my head..I was like DOc so hat are you saying Im CRAZY LMFAO.... SO Ill chaulk it up as being a NUtjob then i guess!!!! I just use the standard POS ones that came with my ipod, but have been looking into a small lil speaker thing possibly for those long races that dont allow you to use earphones.. Any thoughts anyone?

I think it is rude and hazardous to other trail users to wear headphones. You can say whatever blah, blah excuse you want. But when you have earbuds in even one ear, even at a fairly low volume you cannot be as attentive and considerate to others coming up ahead or possibly behind you as otherwise. Concentrating on the audio input, takes away concentration from what you are doing physically and the sounds you would need to pay attention to. Even without headphones sometimes when you are in the zone, you don't notice the people behind or infront of you well enough ahead, and you can get startled when you see their presence. Especially in an area that allows horses, don't attempt riding with buds, you don't want to startle and get whacked by an ultra-muscular half-ton plus animal.

Also if you feel the need to use headphones when riding a mountain bike even when bombing down a hill at over 15mph, you likely have already messed up your brain's neuroplasticity and you just cannot simply "be" without an electronic distraction without becoming ill at ease. How can the mental stimulation and activity of mtbing by itself not be enough for you? This is an underlying, deeper problem you must ask the right questions to get at, a technical solution like biking with headphones cannot fix it, it just a weak palliative you want to use. The author Charles Eisenstein pointed out in an interview, that just the way we exist and relate to our environment causes us profound suffering and hurt. According to him, we are living in an age of acute and extreme separation, we think there is a discrete and separate self, removed from the natural world, and that other people and natural processes are not a natural extension of ourselves(this is influenced alot by Buddhism). One of the consequences of this is that we perceive the world, other people and its processes as hostile, so we seek to dominate them with an ensemble of money, technology and science. According to Lars Svendsen's study the concept of boredom did not exist for the English speaking peoples until 1760. Something happened in the intervening years with how we define ourselves and how interact with our environment(more like against in our society), that makes just being hurt. Thus when we don't have constant activity, or distraction like that from tv or a personal music player with headphones, it is painful, since we cannot any longer be alone with our sense of ourselves in that moment without discomfort, so we say were are bored. But the distractions we seek just hide and allow us to perpetrate the cycle.

I agree with all of the posts about not wearing headphones. If you must rock while you roll, look into an inexpensive bluetooth speaker and play through your smartphone (and carry an extra battery if you can, not an option for i-phoners)

disagree. I wear headphones. and i dont consider it "rude" or "hazardous"

in fact, I think I am an extremely courteous rider.

I think one can wear headphones (well ear buds really) and be no less careful and courteous.

I dont ride them when the park is crowded, generally dont when the leaves are on the trees (i.e., cant really see around corners), etc. - i.e, I do NOT wear them when there's lots of people and/or cant see around corners, etc.

but when it's very early AM in the middle of winter at Huber, Hartshorne, or Allaire for example, (i.e., when you can SEE EVERYTHING and around EVERY CORNER and there's virtually NO ONE in the park)....well, dont really see how that is "rude" or "hazardous"

these arent "excuses" but just common sense ways to enjoy my music while maintaining courtesy.

I have NEVER ONCE had an incident as a result of wearing headphones. not once. HUNDREDS of rides.

...and I dont think wearing headphones changes, one bit, the degree of concentration on the task at hand. not one bit. it might decrease your concentration. but not mine. people are wired differently.

When I ride sole I love groovin down singletrack with some tunes. The Sennheiser work great and mine has a separate volume on the wire that I can clip on my shirt. I ride mostly out in RW and not hearing another rider has never been an issue, I guess if your riding in a highly traffic area or road with it blasting loud its another story, but after nailing a sweet line and having some tunes along can be a rush too : ) The guy who wrote the thesis on boredom probably never had the i-phone
