Chain randomly jumping

My chain has been randomly jumping lately. Tried adjusting shifters ad it seemed like it was ok but then out of nowhere when im at a steady pedal the rear will shift without me touching the shifter. I have had the bike for about 5 years now. Is it time to replace the rear cassette or chain? I do want to upgrade the shifters and derailiers but because money is tight right now I have to make do with the stock shifters.

bent or stiff link

Could be the chain/cassette. 5 yrs is a long time to run a set unless you don't ride it much... How many miles do you have on it?
I'd try replacing the shifter cable and housing first, the cable could be binding.

on the same note - lubricate the cable housings first, and all the pivot points on the der.

or

take to LBS with some pumpkin donuts and see what they "think" -

I would guess you need a new cassette. Look at cassette's teeth, if the teeth most used look pointy (shark fin like), time for a new one.

I always replace chain when installing new cassette.

Good luck.

^ this, the cassette and chain should definately be changed out together

I fully understand the "money" aspect here. So first, clean everything. Degrease and get off any and all gunk, and then lube, including cables and such as was previously mentioned. Sometimes thats all it needs.

If it still does it, then yes you will need to replace some parts 🙁

Cookies and bananas are always appreciated at Halters 😉

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Hopefully its something small like cleaning and lubing. Thanks again everyone
