Why do people have coaches for years on end?

There’s always something that can make you faster / better, isn’t there? Maybe it’s just a mindset.

I’m not really sure what we’re talking about here. I’m guessing Dave had someone very specific in mind when he posted this and was looking for people to agree with his POV
In terms of having better fitness, at some point, no. I think hours means more than anything.

A lot of people keep coaches because accountability is the real product, not just the program. Most people know what to do, they just perform better when someone is watching and adjusting things when life gets messy.

An honest answer.

I worked with Ken long after I needed any help writing a program. For me it was the phone conversations and his ability to convince me what I was capable of doing. He trained me through my entire winter ultra prep, from the first call saying I wanted to do the Iditarod, to coming in 6th place a day in front of Rebecca Rausch in 2019. It was him saying over and over and over that I have the ability to pull a top ten in a race like that. He believed in me so much that it was impossible to not follow through for him. And then to breeze through Paris-Brest a few months later? When you find someone that truly believes in your dreams, it’s an absolute game changer. Analog is better than AI because it hits you where it actually matters.

So what you’re saying is that you needed a mental coach?

AI sycophancy
I have 3 different layers of base instructions to keep this at bay. My bots are all kind of a dick. The coach is especially brutal. It still crops up once in a while but it helps that I'm aware of it and on the lookout.

Definitely not an external motivator - I still have to have the discipline to access it myself and do the work, and it doesn't make me want to fight a bear. But I'm down 30 lbs over the Winter and feel better and more capable on the bike than I ever have.

For a basically-free option, it's kinda hard to beat. At least for me.

I hope tomorrow is @Pearl's birthday too!
