Chimney Rock Conditions

Just got back from Chimney. Blue has a lot of standing water on the trails, with particularly Lower Blue, of course -- not recommended. I'm guessing that we'd be lucky for this to dry/firm up by tomorrow, although seeing the leaves on the trees now gives hope. Weds is probably a better target, which, as things would have it, has more rain in the forecast, I believe.

Cromwell was great at noon. Only a few small puddles and most were on top of rock. @jdog was digging on STOP SIGN with 3 other guys. The trails get better every time because of their work.

Donate to JORBA (there's an option to direct donations to Cromwell) or dig to keep it rolling.

I know someone that ran Blue this morning and it's still a mess. With rain in the forecast I'd stay away from lower blue till Thursday/Friday.

Lower blue and the s turns take the longest to dry anywhere in the park. I sometimes bypass the worse of it by taking it cw and descending back down via the connector right before the log over. That’ll avoid the worse problem spots.

Yesterday's conditions (I don't think they will be much different today tbh):
  • BLUE: interior trail fine; top of blue usual spot sucked; lower from interior to Newmans sucked, stayed away from the rest of lower, which would suck more
  • RED: bottom part of Newman's side, usual spots sucked; lower interior really sucked more spots than not
  • WHITE: primo
  • HI TECH (is that purple or pink or periwinkle or something?): primo
  • GREEN: mostly good except closer to the hi tech entrance was quite wet
  • YELLOW: mostly good except (I think it's the second switchback coming down main vein?) was muddy AF
  • ORANGE: most of the trails from Gilbride up and over to the top of the guard rail was soaked...descent down to the river, along the river, and switchbacks up from the river, along w/ interior trail were primo
Didn't do ballfield loop, black, or Cromwell, but based on yesterday's ride, going elsewhere today.

Go get some!
I did, sir!

Snuck in a ride into Cromwell and yellow before it started pouring.

Yellow was running fantastic.

The fresh tarmac at the top of the hill was freshly painted. Yay?

At the Cromwell property, I saw three young, middle school aged looking boys on electric dirt bikes. They were the same ones, I think, that I’ve seen on other occasions. I spoke to one in the past and he was respectful and apologetic when I told him (nicely) that dirt bikes are not permitted in the park. And yet I still see them here. 😕

I tried to snap a pic of a coyote I saw standing on the dirt jump in the middle of the pic below. One of these days I’ll digitally catch one of Chimney’s elusive coyotes! This was my second sighting this year. He loped off just as I was pulling my phone out. 😩

Rain started coming down harder as I traversed the black connector so I called it a day and headed back.

Fingers crossed the rain tonight doesn’t mar conditions for the weekend. Now that it’s spring, I know the park bounces back and dries pretty quickly.

Haha, they really are well mannered and not little aholes. I said the same thing last night.

Probably the same ones we ran into last week. I explained to them that they aren't allowed, and the smallest kid's answer was "it's ok, I'm not from around here." Had to hold back the laughter, gonna try that (in a joking way, not seriously) next time I talk to a cop (hopefully I don't need any such conversations but life happens).

When I emphasized that signage is starting to go up, I haven't noticed yet, the same kid mentioned, "Oh, it's right over there." 🤦‍♂️

So yeah, agree, they are respectful and nice when approached, but clearly, kids are gonna keep doing the kid thing.
