6 Mile Run Conditions

This is a post from our friends at GUMBO that I thought was worth sharing as a reminder.

Words of caution.....
Everyone is itching to get out. Everyone....
Be aware, as the white stuff disappears, the brown stuff will be close behind. Temperatures aren't predicted get below freezing all week. The ground is slow to react but at some point, it will begin to thaw. Unfortunately, we're not close enough to Spring to think it won't freeze again, but not this week. The same temperatures that make it feel like Spring, can accelerate the thaw and turn the trails into soup.
Only you can prevent trail damage. If you're leaving ruts, don't be nuts, no ifs or buts, have the guts..... to call the ride. The reality is it's bound to happen, and it will get ridden in eventually. The goal is to minimize the damage. So bikers, hikers, and horse folks alike, please give the trails time to recover. No idea when that will be, so just make good decisions based on the conditions you find.

Please do not ride Six Mile yet. I did some recon yesterday and it’s still not rideable. Most of it is wet/muddy.

I didn’t see any tire tracks, that means when the trails dry they should be in shape. The trail crew has been active over the winter keeping up with maintenance.

We’ve taken the last 2 months off from trail maintenance due to snow pack. I think we should be good for next month.

Blue from canal road lot, still very wet in spots with standing water.

Trails are open and in good shape. There's still some soft spots here and there.

I've asked the park to take down the freeze/thaw signs.

Huge thanks to everyone for not riding over the winter!

Continue to post here if you find issues. If you can, include a picture, a map pin, and something for scale of whatever the issue is.

This is not what I excepted to hear at all. I thought 6-Mole was 3 months out still 😂

This is the results of multiple years of reroutes, trail adjustments, and attention to the small details.

Can't stop freeze-thaw, but a few Tweeks here and there...

We all know @jdog's involvement, there are another 6 or so making the magic happen.

Maybe this summer we can celebrate their work with a group ride. Lunch provided!

Trails were in good shape. Some puddles here and there, a little mud, but conditions improved during the ride. Should be nice and tacky tomorrow.
All hail the Trial Crew! And big thanks to all users for staying of the trails; combined with the trail maintenance, it really makes a difference.

You are so spot on! In years past it would be rutted to hell in March.

Did a full pull on the whole park yesterday, dry as a bone and very fast! I noticed quite a bit of work done since i rode here last fall including some good berm work but what stood out was the massive amount of what seemed to be brush cut back trailside. So much so, it revealed an *entire house* (well, remnants of one) that's been there right next to the trail all along but obscured by bush so thick it'd make the 70's blush. 6M certainly suffers from heavy brush encroachment in the warmer months, especially with the poison ivy vines, that this will be a huge help keeping trails clear. Thank you trail crew!

a very long time ago, the trail did not run by that foundation - it went "low" and came back.
We moved it up out of the mud. The park came through and found the house too.
It was still there in a serious state of disrepair. Shortly after they came in and took away the debris to prevent it from further contamination of the surrounding area (asbestos, roof shingles, etc)

It looks even more "cleared" now - so I think the trail fairies did some work in there.

Good catch!

Makes you wonder what that house originally was. Judging from the fairly small cinderblock footprint, this was a pretty modest structure even if it had a 2nd story. Its kinda close, but not exactly adjacent to Middlebush and also right next to a farm field. Hunting cabin? Laborer housing?

Going to jump on the “6 Mile is in great shape” bandwagon. Rode it all on Wednesday and was in super great shape. Saw Chris out there cutting down trees. Was happy to see the December Jorba event where we created that new berm and shaped the downhill into it survived the winter in such great shape. So much other work I saw… wow, so many downed trees must’ve been cleared!

The area was settled in the 1700s but the block foundation says this home wasn't "that" old.
Single story by the marks on the fireplace/chimney.
CMU initially appeared in the 1940s according to the Google.
Interesting question - a modest home for a farmer working a parcel? Or farm worker housing?
Is there a 6MR docent?

Shout out to the NICA team that was there tonight. One of your riders, guessing out for a pre ride warm up lap, came upon me on his way back to the lot to meet up with y’all. I was dealing with a minor mechanical and he stopped to ask if I was ok, if I needed any help, was I sure, etc.

Must have asked 4 times at least. My (undiagnosed) ADHD tunnel vision when I’m dealing with a problem led me to forget to ask his name. I did thank him and let him know that if I had more issues down trail y’all would pass me by on your ride as I did the walk of shame back to the lot (no walk of shame, rest of ride was great).

Just want to shout out and commend what a fine young man he was, exhibiting NICA values and just good old fashioned humanity. Solid role model there for the youngsters on the team!

@KenS can probably narrow down who was there to make sure the coach gets word of good NICA values !

They were departing the lot when I rolled back in. It was dark, and since I overdid it on the ride, I was completely spent and not thinking of anything other than eat/shower/bed! Didn't even occur to me to talk to one of them, totally absent-minded (which is the norm for me, sadly). That's why I ended up posting here, hoping one of them would see
