Car-spotting thread

I did a thing. Sorry @Magic. Here's the short version.

I parked the shitbox in the middle of the driveway for no good damn reason. Stupid. Later that night, I backed the GTI out of the garage, turned the steering wheel (my driveway is somewhat curved), and clipped the tire of the shitbox with the corner of the GTI front bumper cover at like 10mph. I ripped the entire bumper cover off, tore most of the mounting tabs, ripped out the fog light harness, the front collision warning sensor, the belly pan, the inner fender, and broke the grille into 3 pieces.

It doesn't look bad. I got 3 estimates the next day. $1850 was the cheapest. The Porsche certified body shop, which I hear does fabulous work, was $2900. I have a $1000 collision deductible with NJM so not worth taking a CarFax hit for $850+.

I talked with Dee and bitched about having a car without factory paint, how I'm never 100% satisfied with resprays, and how I'll always know. She suggested I price out a new car instead of fixing the GTI. The GTI is a year old with 10,000 miles on it, so we figured if I can get into a new car for under $4000, it's probably worth it just to upgrade. At least when you're OCD like me.

I really loved the GTI but sometimes wished it had more room in the backseat and boot. I considered a Tiguan R-Line but I thought I'd miss a sporty DD too much. Plus they are a bit more money for an SE R-Line Black package (but looked really nice).

So, I ended up with this.

Leftover 2019 Jetta GLI. It's basically a sedan GTI without the plaid seats. And smurf blue color.

I traded the GTI as is and gave them the 3 estimates so they knew what they were up against. All in, the GLI cost me $1500 after tax, tags, and doc fee. So, less than fixing the GTI! The leftover 2019 VWs are deeply discounted and they were very fair on the trade ($20,500) considering the damage.

Overall a good outcome to a shitty situation.

Then I tried my hand at ceramic coating for the first time. cQuartz UK 3.0. $58. It's supposed to last a year or two. It was bit of a process to prep the paint and apply, but its more time consuming than difficult.

Where did u trade it in at? ( asking for a friend)

If you ever want to have some fun, part out a GTI on FB Marketplace. If there's a NSFW area to post my conversations with people, it's pure gold. Just find a picture of any fancy wheels on the Web and list them. You'll entertain yourself for days!!

Photo of dead GTI.

I did something similar with my Golf R after having it for only a few months. I was backing out of a space, didn't remember quite how far back the curb on the passenger side went and caught the underside of the bumper on it. Sounded like I ripped the whole thing off but thankfully just some bad scrapes underneath where it's not too noticeable. Still drives me crazy though.

Unrelated: Is that Racedeck flooring? How do you like it and did you consider the Freeflow?

It's a knockoff brand...Garage Deck maybe? It has the same weight capacity but a few less "snaps" on each side and a few less color choices. It's been installed since 2014 and I've had no issues with it. Just a few marks on some tiles but if it bothered me I could replace them. I did consider the freeflow design, but I have heard it can get gummed up with dirt/leaves/etc and can be difficult to clean. If I had a drain in the garage and washed the cars inside, I would have gone with freeflow.

The concrete underneath is a little rough with some cracks that would have needed repair to epoxy correctly, so this was an easier solution.

Paul Miller VW of Bernardsville. Ask for Mike Scalfani. He's a high school friend of Dee's and deals with my bullshit with cars remarkably well. It's on the lot at $24,100 and CPO but there are no pictures of it yet so maybe it's still at the body shop. They gave me $20,500 plus probably $1200 in repairs (assuming they used wholesale-priced VW OEM parts), so there might be a little wiggle room on their price.

They also have another 2019 GLI in Pure White with DSG that didn't have factory remote start. That should be $28100 sticker and about $21,500 purchase before any rebates (college grad/military/first responder/SCCA member; which are all stackable). They also have a GLI Autobahn with a manual in Pure White. 0% for 72 months and 180 days until first payment, as well.

Is the Jetta manual or did i miss it?

Sweet Sorority mobile. Was that the same type of car that those Denville Cops were in who gave you the finger?

DSG/Auto. The M2 is the manual in the family.

Delta Delta Delta, can I help ya help ya help ya.

We all understand these times are tough. I decided to social distance myself from this to take the picture. Market Square Chik-fil-a was closed in Hamilton. Obviously she couldn't handle it. A good time for her husband tho throw out "This is why we can't have nice things!" I would have thrown it in 4 wheel and mashed the gas pedal. Send it!

This guy pulled into the parking lot I was sitting in doing reports. He seemed nervous because Ferrari doesn't scream "essential travel". I debated telling him unless he pulls out at full song, he's getting written but I didn't want to get COVID-19 from his Italian car and all.

should've ticketed him on principle - a black Ferrari? White ỉs the worst but black isn't much better.
