Hi everyone! remember me?? im that tall goonie looking kid with the 14 year old cannondale F400 and the gold painted, (legends of the hidden temple) like helmet. ! i kinda dropped off the website and mt biking for a while. Always missed it when id see my bike in my shed and ive been telling myself to get back on the bike and do some riding. well i finally got off my lazy a** and got one here. im looking to get in sahpe a little bit and the only exercise ive ever seemed to like even when i was a kid was bike riding so im going to get back on the bike. butttttttt here is the problem with that. like i said before, My bike is 14 years old!!!! It made me fall in love with mt biking but the thing is it seems to always break when ever i go for a ride. Many things keep going wrong. brakes, dearailers, chains, rims. ive done it all. The main thing thats the problem is that once my front shock goes, theres no repairing it as far as i know. its an old system. the repair cost where adding up to the point where I could just buy a used bike. so as soon as i can find a bike id love to start riding again!!!!

heres my thread about what kind of bike im looking for http://www.mtbnj.com/forum/showthread.php?p=474842#post474842

I don't know or remember you, but you had me at 'gold'. Good luck finding a bike and see you on the trails!

I dont remember you, but welcome back.

I also ride an older bike. From 1998, and to be honest, it does NOT compare to anything else I have ridden. If your older bike is rideable, just ride it anda dont worry about what anyone else thinks about it.

I have a friend in the bike building business that says "the old good stuff is better than the new good stuff" and I ran into (figuratively) a fellow at Mt Creek riding an 11yr old DH bike and he agrees.

As for the shock, I am no expert in that area, but depending on the type/make/etc a rebuild may not be as bad as you think. I thought my shocks were a goner and all I had to do was put in new oil seals and they are like new ($25 and I did it myself).

Welcome back and keep that great sense of humor.

I have a bike from 1998, state of the art at the time, and I have a new bike. The new one is better. You can keep putting whipped cream on shit, or you can get a new bike.

its still ridable for now but the reson i think if the shock goes in screwed because the shocks are built into the frame. somewhere between the top and bottom of the head set. i just dont know if its possible

this is what im dealing with.

ive also made up my mide im going to build my bike piece by piece. my bikes good enough for now.

Piece by piece may end up costing you more money than buying a whole bike. It's possible, just have to be smart about it. I built up a Klein Attitude using only second hand parts and it actually turned out to be a really nice build (king, Thomson, mavic wheels, avid brakes, etc.). But it took me 12 plus months to accumulate all the parts, so if you don't have the time buying a whole bike may be more cost effective.

im just really really bad at saving money. id love to build something from scratch. to me that a lot of fun. and i got the time unless something major goes on the bike. when it comes down to it the bike i have is fine. id just like another. i feel confident enough build a bike myself except for installing the headset. (that scares me for some reason) so as of now ill ride what i got. and im on the look out for a large 29er frame!!!!

Its a large and a 29er and can be dressed up as a SS. (9er cogs 17,18,19,20 and KMC SS chain are free with purchase).

ohh wow thats actually the name of the bike. i thought you where just busting my chops. who the hell names a bike model Salsa El Mariachi. sounds like a spicy mexican dish. $ 1400 is a little price for me though.

dude you can get the fork rebuilt that's were the shock is if you check on the internet i would think you can find a place or a shop to get it done. is the headset 1.5" you might be able to get a lefty for it. does the frame fit...or is it too small
